Private Charlton Earl Merritt and Private Herbert Glen “Herbie” Gammond both served in the First World War. They were married to the two eldest daughters of the Caldwell family (Christina and Ethel). Earl was born in Wyndham Centre near Simcoe, ON. His family moved to South Gillies and ventured into farming, he is buried in the Military Plot at Mountainview Cemetery here in Thunder Bay. Private Merritt and Private Gammond both originally joined the Signal Training Depot and then joined Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry in the field. Private Herbie Gammond was awarded the Military Medal.
